Brazosport Athletic Field House to be Named for W. Marcus Stephenson
Brazosport Class of 1954 and Brazosport Area Leader
The athletic field house at Brazosport High School will soon become the W. Marcus Stephenson Field House. The Brazosport Independent School’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved honoring Stephenson, a Brazosport High School graduate (class of 1954), a former BISD Board Member and a respected Brazosport area leader. In accordance with BISD Local Policy, in naming a new facility, the Board held a public hearing to consider naming recommendations.
Stephenson, a 1954 Exporter graduate and 2009 BISD Wall of Fame recipient, has dedicated over 40 years of his life through volunteer service to BISD and the surrounding communities. From 1967 to 1992, Marcus served on the BISD Board of Trustees, also serving as President of the Board for many of those years. During this time, Stephenson also served on the Texas Association of School Boards, Board of Trustees.
Stephenson has dedicated a great deal of his time to numerous civic and charitable organizations throughout the county:
"BISD is proud to name the field house for Marcus Stephenson, who, through his leadership and service, is an outstanding role model for our students,” said BISD Superintendent Danny Massey. "Mr. Stephenson’s commitment to serving others is in perfect alignment with the values we strive to instill in our students."
Along with being selected to BISD’s Wall of Fame, Mr. Stephenson was awarded the prestigious Stephen F. Austin Leadership Award in 2013. The following year, to honor his service to our community and to the children in BISD, the Texas Dow Employees Credit Union created the Marcus Stephenson Citizenship Scholarship. The award is given each year to a selected Brazosport High School graduate on the basis of character, scholarship, leadership, and extracurricular activities.
Marcus has been married to Lila Jean Mixon Stephenson, also a Brazosport High School graduate, for 60 years. Their four children are all graduates of Brazosport High School, with four of their six grandchildren also being Exporters.
The formal naming ceremony of the Brazosport High School Field House will be held in August.
