This is the image for the news article titled Texas Performance Standards Projects Showcase Winners BISD’s Texas Performance Standards Projects Showcase was held May 18, 2016, at the Lake Jackson Civic Center. The Texas Performance Standards Project (TPSP) is a resource for providing differentiated instruction to gifted/talented (G/T) students and can be used for providing enhanced academic opportunities for all students. The TPSP provides a coherent package of standards, curriculum, and assessments for use in G/T programs from kindergarten through high school. The goal of the TPSP is to provide resources for G/T teachers and students that allow students to create professional quality work in alignment with the Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented Students. At each grade level, the TPSP provides guidelines for independent learning experiences and research projects that teachers can adapt and use with their G/T students. The projects, or “tasks,” are based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and focus on the foundation content areas of English language arts and reading, mathematics, science, and social studies with interdisciplinary connections. Students who participate in the TPSP projects will:
  • develop confidence in their abilities to complete an independent research project;
  • use their own research to produce an innovative, discipline-based product;
  • are stretched to discover what they are capable of doing academically;
  • learn to accept challenges in order to perform at a high academic and intellectual level;
  • explore an area of interest and passion;
  • perform research outside of the traditional curriculum; and
  • improve communication and presentation skills.
Our kindergarten students were invited to participate in the showcase and were all awarded participation ribbons. Outside evaluators from the Brazoria County Art League, Dow Chemical, BISD, and the community judged all first through sixth grade students on their project boards and their communication. Students in grades 4-6 were also graded on the vocabulary of the discipline they studied. Medals will be awarded to the first place winners in each grade level. The public had a chance to vote on winners in each grade level as well and will be awarded a Public Choice Medal.
