BISD Board Approves 2016-17 Calendar

BISD Board Approves 2016-17 Calendar
This is the image for the news article titled BISD Board Approves 2016-17 Calendar On February 16th the Brazosport Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved the instructional calendar for the 2016-17 school year that will have school starting Monday, August 22 and ending before Memorial Day. The selected instructional calendar includes ten student holidays, in addition to a week at Thanksgiving and Spring break, more than two-weeks of a winter break, all while increasing instructional time with students. During the last Legislative Session, House Bill 2610 was approved changing the required 180 days of school instruction to 75,600 minutes. This change gives districts greater flexibility with their calendars. In 2011, BISD made the decision to move from a 7.5 hour school day to the state minimum 7 hour day. As part of the calendar changes for next year, BISD will be adding 30 minutes back to the school day. This change will give campuses greater flexibility with their master schedules, to meet the varied needs of every student. BISD officials met with campus leaders, staff, various community stakeholders, and held a Board of Trustees workshop about this new flexibility. Information was reviewed such as proposed calendars of other surrounding districts along with higher education calendars and we carefully reviewed the four years of evidence on the impact of adding 30 minutes into the school day on student performance and attendance. This adjustment will change the start and end times of the school day. 2016-2017 School Day Start and End Times by Campus

Some of the advantages of our highs schools being able to offer up to eight class periods will be: Personalized student schedules based on individual needs (some students may need 8 classes, others may only need 5).
  • More opportunities for students to take electives from different career pathways.
  • More flexibility for students who are taking Dual Credit and other advanced courses.
  • Allowing for adequate travel time for students that take courses from both high school campuses and/or from Dual Credit at Brazosport College.
  • To provide students the ability to follow their pathway/endorsement as well as participate in athletics and/or fine arts courses.
  • To offer time for extracurricular options.
  • The opportunity to include UIL academic prep classes, as well as college prep classes such as ACT and SAT prep.
  • Ability to take online initial credit and Non-Traditional Class (NTC) learning opportunities for students during the school day with the 1 to 1 Chromebook initiative.
  • To offer Accelerated Instruction (state mandated).
  • House Bill 5, 83rd Legislative Session, added new TEC §28.0217 to require each school district to provide accelerated instruction in the applicable subject area each time a student fails to perform satisfactorily on an end-of-course (EOC) assessment instrument.
  • To offer credit recovery (NTC) and/or trailer courses for students needing additional learning time.
  • To END the school year in May so that students seeking summer college opportunities no longer have scheduling conflicts.
  • The ability to “block” and double period some classes that may need to meet longer.
There will not be any early release or half school days for students during the 2016-17 school year. BISD teachers will still be on 187 contractual days, allowing for more professional development and teacher preparation days that will not impact student attendance days. The 2016-17 calendar provides staff with ten contract days prior to the start of school, instead of the current five. Most teachers and support staff in BISD are at their campuses, already working, preparing for the upcoming year well before their five contractual days. But now, with adding five more days at the beginning of the school year, teachers and support staff will be compensated for those days. BISD will also provide more professional development, along with teacher preparation days, scheduled throughout the school year. In BISD, our greatest resources are our highly effective classroom teachers. These changes will ensure that our teachers will have the training and preparation time to be effective. BISD has proactively addressed a worry that may be of our own secondary staff who have elementary age children in the district and need to drop their children off at school before going to their secondary campus to work. All elementary campuses will have adults available to welcome children inside the campus to handle this. Additionally, no auxiliary personnel wages will be cut because of this change.  We will continue to work to provide the best opportunities and learning experiences for our children so that each of them will be future ready. 2016-2017 BISD Student Holidays
