Career and Technical Education (CTE) is a planned program of courses and learning experiences that begins with exploration of career options, supports basic academic and life skills, and enables achievement of high academic standards, leadership, options for high skill, high wage employment preparation, and advanced and continuing education.
It has been proven that high school students involved in CTE courses are more engaged, perform better and graduate at higher rates. For example: The average high school graduation rate for students concentrating in CTE programs is 93 percent, compared to an average national freshman graduation rate of 80 percent. Also, more than 75 percent of secondary CTE concentrators pursued postsecondary education shortly after high school.
At Brazosport Independent School District the CTE department offers over 100 courses within 13 of the 16 career clusters that are recognized by the State of Texas. These courses are designed to provide students with coherent and rigorous content, as well as hands-on, real world experience in a wide-range of potential career fields. Our career pathways include: Agriculture Science, Architecture and Construction, AV Communication/Informational Technologies, Business, Marketing and Finance, Education and Training/Human Services, Health Science, Hospitality & Tourism, Law, Public Safety, Corrections & Safety, Manufacturing, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) & Transportation, Distribution & Logistics.
With the career clusters listed above, we currently offer 16 certifications. The certifications that BISD offers, range from Cosmetology, Floral Design, Meat Evaluation to Welding. We will be offering 21 different certifications within the 16-17 school year. The CTE department continually looks for ways to improve what we offer for our students.
“Our goal is to not only provide every student within BISD an opportunity to explore their career choices, but to also find that passion that drives them to move forward, whether that is through attending college or earning certifications with the industry of their choice,” says Jennifer Edenfield, BISD Director of CTE.
We invite you to peruse the courses listed within our career pathways on our website at the link below. For more information about any of the courses or career pathways contact your campus counselor or email Jennifer Edenfield at firstname.lastname@example.org.
