The 2015-2016 Freeport Intermediate School Symphonic Band, under the direction of Linda Crummel, placed 3rd in the Association of Texas Small School Bands Outstanding Performance Series competition. Assistant directors of the Freeport Bands are Emily Boedeker, Randy Laran, and Shane Rutherford.
The ATSSB Outstanding Performance Series is a compact disc audition process designed to select the most outstanding Class 1C, 2C, 1A/2A, 3A, and 4A concert band programs in the state of Texas each year. There are two categories of recordings. Every band that competes submits a recording of their march, and recordings of their concert selections. Recordings are sent to compete at the region level. Out of each region, only the top two marches and the top three concert selections advance to the area level. This is the first big elimination process of the competition.
The FIS Symphonic Band had all three recordings advance to the area level. Out of each of the five areas in the state, only the top two marches and the top three concert selections advance to the state level. The FIS Symphonic Band advanced their two concert selections to the state level. The entire audition process starts with hundreds of bands from around the state, narrowing the amount to only 15 bands competing in the concert selection category at the state level. Out of the 15 bands that competed, the FIS Symphonic Band placed 8th with “Portsmouth Reflections” by Michael Oare, and 3rd with “Sparks” by Brian Balmages. Congratulations to the Freeport Intermediate Band for this outstanding accomplishment.
