Approximately 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, with approximately 16,000 being named as Semifinalists. Commended Students are recognized nationally for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of students who entered the competition.
The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements.
To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalist will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title. National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July 2017.
“We are very proud of these students for this outstanding academic achievement,” said Superintendent Danny Massey. “Their accomplishments represent the culmination of hard work from talented students as well as a dedicated teaching staff. It is further evidence of the high quality of education that our students receive in Brazosport ISD.”
