In an effort to obtain valuable feedback and open the lines of communication for innovative ideas, BISD Superintendent Danny Massey started the Superintendent/Teacher Advisory Council. The council is made up of campus Teachers of the Year from across the district who will meet with the superintendent after school four times during the school year.

Massey began the first council meeting on September 21st telling attendees that they can put away their laptops and notebooks, “you are the best of the best and this forum is a place for you to openly share your thoughts and ideas in a safe environment. I want and very much value your input.”

While showing a graphic on the large screen that reads “Innovation = What If we could change everything just by having the courage to ask, What If?” Superintendent Massey asks the group to contemplate this statement.

The group then watched a video about how the basic educational structure has not changed in over 120 years.  Massey challenged the group to THINK DIFFERENTLY about how best to serve our students.

The group then collaborated their ideas in four areas: school calendar, school day, teacher certification and attendance.

The 84th Legislative Session in House Bill 1842 passed the District of Innovation concept giving traditional independent school districts most of the flexibilities available to Texas’ open-enrollment charter schools. Texas Association of School Board Executive Director James B. Crow shares that  “for years, Texas school board members and administrators have complained about the ever-increasing number of state mandates and prescriptive laws and bemoaned the continual erosion of local control. Now there is a realistic process for districts to do something about this. Take advantage. Investigate the possibilities and potential of becoming a district of innovation”.

The four BISD Superintendent/Teacher Advisory Council meetings are scheduled for:

  • September 21
  • November 16
  • February 8
  • April 5, 2017.
