The Brazosport Independent School District annually celebrates its rich history and heritage by honoring outstanding graduates with selection to the Brazosport Independent School District Wall of Fame. This year, Brazosport Independent School District selected two outstanding graduates as Wall of Fame recipients:

Joe E. Rinehart, Brazosport High School class of 1966
Lucilla Longoria Henderson, Brazoswood High School class of 1979

BISD began the recognition of graduates who have demonstrated a high level of achievement in their field of endeavor, who have made significant contributions through achievement, service or leadership in 2007. Since then, with the addition of Rinehart and Henderson, twenty-four graduates have been honored.

Joe E. Rinehart
Joe E. RinehartJoe E. Rinehart, the current mayor of Lake Jackson and 66 year resident of the city, graduated in 1966 from Brazosport High School.  Joe and his younger sister Mary grew up down the street from Elisabet Ney Elementary School, where their love for school and athletics began. At Brazosport, Rinehart excelled in football, basketball and track & field.

Rinehart served his country as a member of the U.S. Army, 199th Light Infantry Brigade, during the Vietnam conflict, from 1969-70. Continuing his military service, Joe joined the 4th Armored Battalion in Bamberg, Germany, returning back home, stateside, in 1971.

Completing his education, Rinehart graduated from Stephen F. Austin University and headed back to Brazosport to begin teaching and coaching at Freeport Intermediate School. In 1980, Rinehart moved to Brazoswood High School, where he worked for his former high school coach, L.Z. Bryan. In the classroom, Joe taught World History, Texas History, U.S. History, World Geography, Economics and Government. Rinehart was selected, by his peers, as Brazoswood High School’s Teacher of the Year in 2001.  A much beloved coach and educator, Joe retired in 2012, after 34 years in public education, all in  BISD.

While teaching his students about history and civic responsibility, Rinehart did not just “talk the talk,” he “walked the walk.” In 2003 Joe Rinehart ran and was elected to the Lake Jackson City Council, going on to serve three consecutive terms. Due to the city’s term limits, Rinehart could not run for a fourth consecutive time, but was eligible to run again in 2011, where he was again elected to serve on the Council. After the election in 2012, Joe Rinehart took on the leadership role of Mayor of the city of Lake Jackson, where he is now serving his third, and final term.

Mayor Rinehart has served on the Board of Directors for the Houston-Galveston Area Council, and presently serves on the Board of Directors of the Economic  Alliance of Brazoria County, is a member of the Flash Walker-L.Z. Bryan Scholarship Committee and serves on the Dow Chemical Citizens’ Advisory Panel.

Joe and his wife Becky are very active in Chapelwood United Methodist Church. Joe has served on the Staff-Parish Relations Committee and is very active with the COT Emmaus Community. Their two daughters, Molly and Meredith, both graduates of BISD, provide great getaway spots for their parents with Molly living in California and Meredith in Austin.

Lucilla Longoria Henderson
Lucilla Longoria HendersonWith her family moving to Lake Jackson when she was just a baby, Lucilla Longoria Henderson attended school in Lake Jackson and then Brazoswood High School along with her two sisters, Teresa and Rosemary. As a 1979 graduate of Brazoswood, Lucilla was active in Belles, serving as a social officer, along with participating in other campus groups.

Lucilla took classes at Brazosport College concurrently during her senior year of high school and continued another year at BC before heading off to Texas State University where she earned a BBA in Marketing.  Following college graduation, Lucilla married her high school sweetheart, Eric Henderson, and they returned to the Brazosport area to begin their careers and raise their family.

Henderson spent 23 years in the shopping center industry where she held marketing director and general manager positions in Lake Jackson and Houston, receiving numerous awards, including:

Top Leasing General Manager in General Growth Properties Third Party Division
Profit Center Management Award and the Administrative Management Award
President's Award as Mall Retail Manager of the Year
Manager of the Year with Marathon Real Estate
President's Award in Marketing
Marketing Director of the Year from with Herring Marathon Group

In 2008, Henderson accepted the opportunity to join the Texas Dow Employees Credit Union, serving as Vice President of Marketing for 5 years. In 2013, Lucilla transitioned to serve TDECU as the Vice President of Community and Business Engagement.  She currently serves on the board for the Texas Credit Union Executives Society.

Being of service to her community and to others around the world, has always been a passion of Lucilla’s, so becoming a member of the Brazosport Rotary Club since 1987 was a natural choice. Henderson, along with former BISD Superintendent Pat Shell, were the first two women inducted into the club. Lucilla remains an active member of the service club and is a two time Paul Harris Fellow.

Continuing in her desire to help her community, in 1998, Henderson served as Chairman of the Brazosport Chamber of Commerce and she continues to support the Chamber’s Taste of the Town committee, which she has been part of since its inception.  In 2008, Lucilla was appointed to the Board of Regents for Brazosport College, and since then, she has been elected to the position where she continues to serve as a Board Member today. She is a member of the Alliance of Brazoria County Economic Development board and had the honor of serving as Co-Chair of Brazoria County Day in Austin in 2015.

Over the past 35 years, Lucilla has served the boards of BACH, Junior Achievement, SPCA, City of Lake Jackson Parks Board and Development Board and has been active in St. Michael’s Catholic Church Youth Ministry.

Lucilla Henderson was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of Brazosport College in 2003, and named Woman of the Year by the Brazosport Area Chamber of Commerce in 2011.

Although she has accomplished a great deal, Lucilla Longoria Henderson’s most cherished roles are that of being “the mom to her three children, Audrey, Indy and Emily; the wife of Eric Henderson; the daughter of Juan and Mary Ann Longoria, and the daughter in-law of now deceased Vincent and Fern Henderson.”
