Character Education

Mission: To develop positive character traits in students by providing a high quality character education process and resources to schools, homes, and communities.

The goal of BISD in implementing a comprehensive plan for character education is to develop students socially, ethically and academically by fostering character development and promoting rigorous learning. Character education supports academic excellence because it lays a foundation for ALL learning that takes place in school.

Character Education:

  • Builds a positive campus climate
  • Builds connections with students, teachers, parents, and communities
  • Supports positive behaviors in every area of school life

BISD is using The CHARACTERCOUNTS!® educational framework for the district wide implementation of character development. CHARACTER COUNTS! is one of the most widely implemented approaches to character education in the world, reaching millions of youth.

CHARACTERCOUNTS!®

A framework centered on basic values called the "Six Pillars of Character":

trustworthiness
, respectresponsibilityfairnesscaring, citizenship
  • Embraced by thousands of schools, communities, public agencies and nonprofit organizations for a simple reason — it works.
  • Not a curriculum or add-on, but a powerful means to advance curricular and behavioral goals.

The CHARACTERCOUNTS!® program will provide a framework to help establish a common language for campuses, parents and community concerning character education.

Josephson Institute, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, administers the national office of CHARACTERCOUNTS!®.  Please follow the link below to visit the Josephson Institute website or the link directly to the CHARACTERCOUNTS!® website.  The websites provide activities and information about character education.
