Ms. Sula Lowe-Baye

1960 Graduate of Lanier High School

Sula graduated from Lanier High School as Valedictorian. After graduation, she enrolled at Texas Southern University. She graduated 3 years later & shortly afterward, enrolled in the Department of Zoology at the University of Texas. She married and moved to Knoxville Tennessee and obtained a Master of Science Degree from the University of TN in 1967. She was the first African American to receive this degree from the University of TN. In 1972, Sula entered the Law School at UT Austin and graduated in 1975.

She was subsequently hired as the first African American woman attorney for the US FDA, Office of the General Counsel, at the US Attorney's Office in Houston. She was the first African American Woman partner of the Philadelphia law firm of Montgomery, McCracken, Walker and Rhoads. She served as corporate counsel with SW Bell, Union Carbide Corporation and BASF Corporation.

She has served as a mentor to scores of women, minority lawyers, and business personnel over the past 30 years. She has taught at Huston-Tillotson College and Travis College in Austin TX and Seton Hall School of Law in Newark, NJ. Ms. Baye is retired and resides in Chicago, IL.
