This week aspiring teachers from Shimane University in Japan visited two BISD campuses to experience American culture and classroom learning styles. The visitors networked with staff and students at Velasco Elementary and SFA STEM Academy as they shared lesson plans and demonstrated educational equipment uses in the classroom.
This marks the 6th consecutive year Dr. Makito Yurita, Associate Professor and research consultant at JAXA (the equivalent of NASA in Japan), has reached out to BISD teacher Javier Montiel to request the tour. Montiel met Dr. Yurita during the 2011 Space Education Conference held at NASA.
In April, Dr. Yurita will move to an international position as Senior Research Fellow for JAXA. In this position he will conduct studies and pilot programs to help inspire teachers and improve teacher education within his country.
This was an outstanding learning experience for BISD students and staff, as well as for our guests from Japan. We are honored to have the opportunity to share the great things happening in our classrooms!
