Viggo Arechiga, a 5th grade student at O’Hara Lanier Middle School has advanced to the Houston Public Media Spelling Bee at the University of Houston April 1, 2017. He was named Champion at the Brazoria County Regional Spelling Bee on February 17. At the end of 22 rounds, Arechiga had out spelled a total of 31 other students from across the region.
Make plans to cheer and watch BISD’s Viggo Arechiga Saturday, April 1, as he competes for a spot at the final competition. Live streaming begins at 1:30 p.m. Final rounds will be live streamed at 7:00 p.m. and live broadcast on TV Channel 8 in the Houston area. . The top two spellers advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which will be held May 30-June 1, in the Washington, DC area.
The Brazoria County Regional Spelling Bee, hosted by Lake Jackson Intermediate School, received donations and sponsorships from the community. The school and BISD would like to thank Park Place Sports and Awards for providing a discount on the t-shirts for the participants and for donating the banner for the stage. We are also grateful to Sonic, Texas Roadhouse, and Raising Canes for donating gift cards for the judges and pronouncer.
