Brazosport Independent School District Board of Trustees voted at their meeting Tuesday, February 21, to realign the Freeport school feeder pattern a year early, beginning this next 2017-18 school year.
The 2014 Bond called for building a new elementary school on the Jane Long campus site with a student capacity of 750 students and closing O. A. Fleming Elementary. Student enrollment numbers at Velasco, Fleming, and Long this year allowed the consideration of reaping the benefits of the grade reconfiguration one year sooner.
Beginning in August 2017, all Freeport Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and 1st grade students will attend O.A. Fleming and all 2nd grade through 4th grade students will attend Velasco Elementary School in the Freeport feeder pattern, with R.O’Hara Lanier continuing on as the 5th and 6th grade campus. There will be no attendance boundaries in this feeder pattern, which will help with the high mobility rate.
“Having the construction of a 90,000 square foot campus next to an existing school can be very disruptive for student learning,” stated Superintendent Danny Massey. “It is vital that our Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and 1st grade students have the literacy supports to be on grade level or above before entering 2nd grade. Having a 2nd grade through 4th grade campus also allows resources and supports to be targeted at those specific grade levels.”
Discussions about closing Jane Long Elementary a year early were held during a Board Workshop last December. In working with the campus principals, reviewing and studying the enrollment numbers and available classrooms, Velasco would only increase by 30 students. Fleming would double in size, but still would be under Velasco’s enrollment numbers.
The realignment of the Freeport feeder pattern a year early will enable BISD staff to have a much stronger focus with similar grade levels while providing extra support for the English language learners. No employees will lose their jobs because of this move. The teachers at the respective campuses will move with the students. Transportation accommodations will also be made available.
In August of 2018, the new PreK-1st grade Freeport Elementary campus is scheduled to open and O. A. Fleming will close.
