In January, BISD students in Pre-K through 8th grade began making preparations for the Brazoria County Science Fair. Projects were planned, registration forms submitted and the hard work of constructing the project for the February 17-18th event was completed.

Brazosport ISD had 97 science project entries this year, with our students bringing home 39 medals, which includes multiple Best of Show awards.

Organizers were excited about this year's science fair with the 100+ percent increase in participation from previous years. This year the Brazoria County Science Fair, hosted by the Brazoria County Fair Association, had student participation from public schools as well as private and homeschooled students across the county.

The Brazoria County Science Fair is made possible because of the following generous sponsors: Dow Chemical, Phillips 66, Chevron Phillips, BASF, and Olin and the support of numerous volunteers. Over 40 judges showed up Saturday morning to grade the 240+ projects. Students in grades 7th and 8th also had to participate in an interview conducted by an engineer, a local teacher, and a PhD student. Students submitted projects in one of the following categories:

  • PreK - 2nd grade Observation & Investigation
  • PreK - 3rd grade Models
  • PreK - 8th grade Experimental

Volunteer judges came from the following supporters:

  • Brazosport ISD Math & Science teachers
  • West Columbia Elementary teachers
  • Sweeny Elementary teachers
  • Angleton Christian School teachers
  • Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic School teachers and parents
  • Brazoria County Extension Office
  • BASF
  • Dow Chemical
  • Chevron Phillips
  • Phillips 66
  • Burns & McDonnell

A very special “thank you” goes to Jenna Clements, K-12 Science, and Sandra Consilio, K-12 Math, for inspiring both teachers and students to engage in the event this year, helping this qualify as one of the most successful in recent years. Sandra Consilio, Brazoria County Science Fair Chairman, in reflecting on the great value of science fair projects said, “Of course, learning about science is at the heart of a science fair project. Our society relies more on science every day, and science fairs are a great way for students to become more knowledgeable about how the world around them works. Every citizen needs sufficient science literacy to make educated decisions about what he or she reads in the media, about health care, and about other everyday problems.”

Next year big changes are coming to this event. The Brazoria County Science Fair is excited to welcome more participation by expanding the number of grade levels invited to participate. Additional changes include moving models to systems (how everything has parts that work together to do a job) and adding a category of STEM - how students engineer a solution to a problem through science, technology, and math.
