About Read 20

BISD's Read 20 Literacy Initiative

Brazosport ISD’s approach to literacy is more than just a program or initiative, it is a movement set out to help ensure that each and every third grader is reading on grade level or higher by reading 20 minutes each night.

There are many components to Read 20 that involve not only teachers, but parents, district personnel, and community members at large. “We have a very supportive community that values education,” says Superintendent Danny Massey. “A key component of our literacy effort includes engaging our teaching community, families, community members, and businesses to get involved. It’s going to take the whole village to create these readers as leaders!”

As parents, we should never underestimate the power of reading. Making reading a part of family life can help children develop a learning pace that will build over time. By reading 20 minutes every night starting in kindergarten, a student will have read for the equivalent of 60 school days, and will most likely score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests. Additionally, reading helps our children develop a better vocabulary, which will be an integral part of being future ready!

The Read 20 action plan includes nine action steps:

  • Promote the importance of reading 20 minutes a day
  • Provide training and resources to all BISD staff to ensure high quality reading acceleration, intervention and enrichment
  • Ensure every elementary classroom has implemented balanced literacy (reading, writing and speaking) with fidelity
  • Solicit and support continued community participation
  • Provide access to reading materials in the community
  • Implement family and community initiatives to promote reading throughout the Brazosport area
  • Provide resources to parents/guardians that will foster early reading readiness
  • Implement district-wide, campus-based reading initiatives
  • Celebrate student attainment of literacy skills

Brazosport ISD believes in the ability of ALL learners, the instructional capacity of our amazing staff, and the unwavering support of our families and community! We are excited to lead this movement and look forward to developing young readers as future leaders.
