This is the image for the news article titled BISD and Surrounding Agencies Receive Active Shooter TrainingOur Brazosport ISD Police Department along with surrounding agencies came together this week for active shooter training. The training was held at Bess Brannen Elementary.

This dynamic training, led by Freeport Detective Thomas Slater with members of the combined Special Response Team, was designed to prepare the first responder to isolate, distract, and neutralize an active shooter. The training extensively covered shooting and moving, threshold evaluation, concepts and principles of team movement, setting up for and room entry techniques, secondary responder tactics, and post engagement priorities of work. The course ended with dynamic force-on-force scenarios.

The officers spent the morning working on going up and down stairs correctly focusing on verbal and non verbal commands on how to get into a classroom and then what to do once inside. The afternoon was used to apply what they had learned by going through realistic scenarios on campus.

“Any and all training is good,” said BISD Chief Wade Nichols, “But this training truly assisted us in honing our skills on our active shooter response and you can never train too much!”

This exercise is just the first of many educational opportunities that will be held for our officers throughout the summer. The BISD Police training will continue to be expanded upon and to reflect the lessons learned from experts on the recent and the past tragic events.

The safety of our students and staff are our number one priority!
