This day each year is committed to the art and practice of reading aloud and also, simply to reading. In oral form, the telling of stories about mankind was passed down from generation to generation even before writing was invented. This way of storytelling was the earliest method of keeping and sharing mankind’s knowledge, history, insight, and imagination. Celebrating World Read Aloud Day® helps us bring this tradition back to reading while encouraging literacy in our schools, our community, and throughout the rest of the world.

In 2010, LitWorld, a non-profit organization in the field of education, introducedthe first World Read Aloud Day® to promote diverse voices and stories around the world. According to LitWorld’s website, the day celebrates “the joy and power of reading and sharing stories,” and “expanding the definition and scope of global literacy.” Now, World Read Aloud Day® has become a truly global movement with a record of having trended on Twitter and manycelebrity endorsements. Celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Chelsea Clinton, Jimmy Fallon, and millions of other people around the globe, participate in and support World Read Aloud Day® which brings us together to celebrate the impact of sharing our unique and special stories.

Now, the good news is that the world is more literate now than ever before! Each year, World Read Aloud Day® is a top trending hashtag on Twitter, applauded by millions of people around the world.
