The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) helps schools create healthier school environments by providing healthier food choices, expanding the variety of fruits and vegetables children experience, and increasing fruit and vegetable consumption.

“FFVP is a program that we participated in during the 21-22 school year and we are excited to have been selected again for the 2022-23 school year,” said Amy Anderson, BISD Director of Child Nutrition.

The two schools that have been selected to participate are Freeport Elementary School and Velasco Elementary School. The schools were selected due to the high percentage of economically disadvantaged students. Beginning in October, students will receive a serving of fresh fruit or vegetables as an afternoon snack. The grant will provide funding up to $74,087 to cover the cost of the produce. There is also a nutrition education piece provided to students. Lisa Mitchell, BISD Assistant Director/ Dietitian will administer the program for Velasco and Freeport Elementary Schools.

Anderson added regarding the program, “This has proven to be an effective and creative way to introduce fresh fruits and vegetables as healthy snack options.”
