Senior Ava Garza and sophomores Harper Nichols and Kate Morris attended the convention after Garza was accepted to lead a session titled “What’s Wrong With Being Confident.” In her session she discussed her various roles in journalism that she has landed since becoming a yearbook editor. Ava Garza has been a national ambassador for Jostens Inc, Brazoswood’s yearbook publishing company, a sideline reporter for VYPE Houston, and has worked closely with some friends she has made along the way at KHOU Houston.

While at the convention, the students also participated in a variety of competitions, bringing home two national titles to add to a long list of awards received this year. Sophomore and first year staff member Kate Morris received a rating of Excellent on her photo submission in the “First Year Photography” category. Ava Garza received an Honorable Mention for her “Sports Action” portfolio. These accolades were selected from almost 450 photo entries with only 16 receiving the Excellent placement, and only 36 receiving the Honorable Mention title.

Congratulations to Lela Siegel and her outstanding students for their achievements at the National High School Journalism Convention. Their participation, presentations, and triumphs, including two national titles, not only highlight their current talents, but also offers a glimpse of the promising futures they have ahead in the field of journalism.
