This is the image for the news article titled Janice Eubanks Storybook Summer Tradition Favorite Continues in BISDThe Janice Eubanks Storybook Summer reading tradition, now in its 16th year, made its impact on another class of Brazosport ISD first graders. Thanks to generous donations from supportive organizations and individuals, each first grader was provided their own copy of the book “Second Grade Rocks” to begin their summer reading and home library in honor of former teacher Janice Eubanks.

Janice Eubank lost her battle with ALS/Lou Gehrig’s disease in March 2007. She taught in BISD for the final 24 years of her 35-year career. Her passion was teaching children, and her dream was that every student in first grade would have a special gift at the end of the school year, and that people would come and read to them. Janice’s Storybook Summer is a memorial to her with the main goals being to impart literacy and to encourage the love of reading, goals Janice strongly supported.

Since a part of Janice’s vision was that the book be read to the students, special community volunteers from the Brazosport area take time on a Friday every May to read the book to each first grade class in BISD, Our Lady Queen of Peace, Brazosport Christian School and in Tulia (Janice’s hometown). Over 50 volunteers participated this year.

Thank you to everyone that made this reading event a beloved one that honors the memory of this beloved former teacher, Janice Eubank.
