Advanced Academics

Brazosport ISD's program for gifted and talented students is designed to serve those who perform or show potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience or environment.

"Students who are intellectually gifted demonstrate many characteristics, including: a precocious ability to think abstractly, an extreme need for constant mental stimulation; an ability to learn and process complex information very rapidly; and a need to explore subjects in depth. Students who demonstrate these characteristics learn differently. Thus, they have unique academic needs.” Marie Capurro, M.Ed , Director of Programs and Services for the Davidson Institute.

Brazosport ISD teachers and staff members who work with gifted students receive at least 30 hours of GT training, plus the required 6 hours annual update and use a variety of instructional models with students.  These include pull-out sessions, cluster grouping, mixed-ability classes with differentiated instruction, acceleration, Pre-Advanced and Advanced Placement classes.  The curriculum for gifted students is adapted and differentiated in the following ways:

  • Student Interest – offering choice in learning experiences
  • Pace – moving fast enough to keep students motivated and challenged
  • Breadth – going wider in scope/enriching
  • Depth – digging deeper into the topics
  • Complexity – tying knowledge in with other ideas
  • Creativity - playing around with concepts – innovating
